State extends Cougar Island sale deadline

The Bellevue attorney who bid $2 million on a Cougar Island lot during a September auction has paid for a 30-day extension to close on the sale, according to the Idaho Department of Lands.

Jim Laski, who owns a home on one of five lots platted on the 14.2-acre island in Payette Lake, now has until Dec. 14 to close on his bid, IDL spokesperson Sharla Arledge said.

Laski paid a non-refundable $5,000 fee to the lands department to extend the deadline, which previously was set for last Monday, or 60 days after the Sept. 14 auction held in Eagle, Arledge said.

Idaho Department of Lands cone collection is first step in forest regeneration program

The Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) manages a crop, like a farm. State forests grow timber. Timber is a commodity, and like most, there is a standard of quality, measurements, and methods of collection. The IDL was appointed by our state constitution to maximize long-term financial returns to Idaho public schools.

Idahoans depend on IDL to manage this tree-crop in perpetuity, in a sustainable and economic way. This is a distinct difference in our approach to forest management.

A successful tree regeneration program is the promise of future success, for Clearwater County, and for Idaho. Cone collection is an important first step in a forest regeneration program.

Land Board to review land swap proposal for mineral rights on Meta data center site

An LLC associated with Meta’s new data center is requesting a land swap with the Idaho Department of Lands, but it’s not for the property itself.

Last week, the Ada County Commissioners met with Zane Latham with IDL and Preston Carter, a lawyer representing an LLC associated with Meta’s proposed data center on the eastern edge of Kuna. They asked for the commissioners to give their input on a proposal to swap 125 acres of timberland in Shoshone County Brisbie LLC is poised to purchase for the mineral rights underneath the 205 acre parcel set for the data center.

Brisbie LLC already owns the property it would like to develop the data center on, but completing this land swap will ensure they own the fee title to the property in its entirety. Carter told the commissioners this land swap will likely not prevent the project from moving ahead and is largely procedural.

The commissioners will have until February of next year to send a letter in opposition to the swap, which will be decided by the Land Board.

Commissioners to revisit road vacation

SPIRIT LAKE — Neighbors on Hidden Valley Road in Spirit Lake are seeking a road vacation of a public right of way, citing concerns about nuisance, trespass, and other complaints.

The petition for the road vacation (VS0001-22) was first heard Oct. 26, but due to a lack of comment by the Idaho Department of Lands, whose property touches the dedicated roadway, the commissioners chose to continue the meeting until Nov. 9.

The road, which residents petitioned the county to take over in 1915, has not been maintained by the county, the residents claim in their request for the road vacation of over half of a mile of the road. The last thousand or so feet appear to have never been maintained and is more of a “skid trail,” one of the neighbors, Bill Hertzberg, said.

2022 Forestry Contest

Save the date: The 40th Idaho State Forestry Contest will be held May 11, 2023 at Farragut State Park!

Watch last year's version of this Idaho tradition.

The annual contest introduces students in grades 5 through 12 to basic forestry and resource management. The contest is typically held the second Thursday in May and is sponsored by the Idaho Department of Lands, Bonner Soil and Water Conservation District, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
