Wildland Fire Mitigation presentation set for April 27
Clearwater Tribune, 4-13-22
The 2022 wildfire season is fast approaching and just as last year, a very dry, hot fire season is predicted by the experts. With that in mind and the memory of last falls’ destructive Bedrock Canyon fire near Lenore still fresh in everyone’s minds, the Clearwater Valley Fire Districts Auxiliary (CVFDA) will be hosting the Second Annual Wildland Fire Mitigation Presentation at Orofino City Park from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

Wildfire prevention in southwest Idaho gets boost from federal infrastrucure law
BSU Public Radio, 4-13-22
Millions of dollars from the federal infrastructure law will go toward implementing the U.S. Forest Service’s 10-year wildfire strategy.
An initial $131 million investment will focus on ten high-priority projects in eight states, including Idaho. The Southwest Idaho Fuels Reduction Project is one of the initiatives to receive funding.
The project expands upon efforts already underway in Idaho to reduce wildfire risk, such as the Good Neighbor Authority and Shared Stewardship programs. They work to make sure forest treatments happen collaboratively across federal and state lands.

Local, statewide colleagues mourn the death of Marc Shigeta
Argus Observer, 4-10-22
A longtime member of the Payette County Board of Commissioners is dead at the age of 73. County officials described the news of Marc Shigeta’s death on Friday at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Meridian as a shock, as comments shared with the newspaper indicated.
Shigeta was first elected to the board in 2002. He also served on the Idaho Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, beginning in 2017.
Sharla Arledge, public information officer for the Idaho Department of Lands, reflected on Shigeta’s willingness to listen to his constituents.
“He was a strong advocate for the residents of Payette County and brought that advocacy to the Idaho Oil and Gas Conservation Commission,” wrote Arledge. “Shigeta was thoughtful with his contributions to the [commission] and held a consistent line that the residents who are most effected by oil and gas operations in the state should have a strong voice. He was always willing to listen to and talk with the people of his county.”

Areas of U.S. see fire season start early
KIVI, 4-9-22
Fire season is already starting, and in some areas, it’s early.
According to Jim Walmann, Meteorologist at the National Interagency Coordination Center, this is a concern.
“When you get these early season fires, they're definitely a wake up call," Walmann said, "we're actually in a lot of cases seeing our fire potential increase earlier in the season. Sometimes it can be two weeks but as much as six weeks ahead of schedule.”
The Idaho Department of Lands responded to a fire already earlier this month in Banks which burned about 6 acres. This one was unseasonably early.
“It’s two months ahead for a fire of that size and of that active behavior, so we are a little concerned that that might be a harbinger for things to come," Casper Urbanek, IDL Southwest Fire Warden, said in an interview about recruitment to the agency.

Forest Service announces spring prescribed fire burning plan for southwest Idaho
KTVB, 4-8-22
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service announced plans for spring prescribed fire burning in 11 project areas across southwest Idaho on Friday.
If weather and conditions allow the burning to proceed as scheduled, around 4,200 acres will be ignited in 11 project areas in the Boise National Forest beginning in April. The burning will continue through June.
The USDA Forest Service and Boise National Forest said fire managers in southwest Idaho anticipate "favorable spring weather conditions" during the planned low-intensity prescribed fires.
The USDA Forest Service, Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau of Land Management and the Idaho Department of Lands will work together on the spring prescribed fire burning.
An interactive map of the planned burns within the Boise National Forest can be viewed by clicking here. Interactive maps of prescribed fire treatments in the Payette and Sawtooth National Forests are also included on the USDA Forest Service's website.

Opinion - Conserving Cougar Island critical to character of Payette Lake
Star-News, 4-7-22
Sitting just north of the Ponderosa State Park peninsula that extends into Payette Lake lies 14-acre Cougar Island, a tree-covered haven surrounded by deep blue waters.
But the island we now know as Cougar wasn’t always called that. In fact, for a period of about 20 years, beginning in the early 1960s, this island was called Channel Island and Payette Lake’s other large island (Shellworth Island), located on the southeast side of the lake, was referred to as Cougar.
How did Shellworth become Cougar, and Cougar become Channel? According to the Aug. 22, 1984 edition of The Star-News, the snafu began when an Idaho Department of Lands forester used a mislabeled map, which became accepted as accurate and true.
