Legislative Update
IDL is tracking and reporting on legislative actions that may impact our operations. We publish this information in the IDL Legislative Update newsletter each Wednesday and meet as a team to discuss the legislative session on Thursdays. Archived copies of this newsletter are available on our One Team, One Voice webpage.
IDL's Legislation
HB 468 - Preventing Recreational Damage to Endowment Land
Wildland Firefighter Differential Pay RS
- This legislation is likely to have its print hearing in the House Commerce and Human Resources Committee next week.
- Rep. Dixon has agreed to sponsor this legislation in the House.
Budget Update
JFAC members had questions regarding the Fire Business System requested in our budget. We prepared a white paper that provides detailed information about our dedicated fund request for $1,013,000 to purchase and implement Gold’s Fire Business System, an integrated electronic system for managing all aspects of fire billing, invoicing, cost reconciliation, cost sharing, reporting and data warehousing.
The white paper was sent to Chairmen Agenbroad and Youngblood.
Director Miller met with Senator Cook on Jan. 31 to discuss the Gold's Fire Business System, and in follow-up to that meeting, answered additional questions via email.
Foresters Forum
This week Director Miller and staff from IDL joined Governor Little at the Foresters Forum in Coeur d'Alene. The forum, an annual industry event hosted by Northwest Management, Inc. and Riley Stegner & Associates, LLC provides professional foresters the opportunity to learn new ideas, techniques, technologies and share information. IDL's participation represents a great opportunity for the agency to interface with its industry partners.
At the event, IDL provided opening remarks and gave presentations on Wildland Forest Fire - StarFire and Arson: Why the Idaho Department of Lands Investigates Fire and its Process.
Public Trust now Navigable Waterways
IDL has changed the name of the program formerly known as Public Trust to Navigable Waterways. Staff prepared a white paper regarding the change.
This change will help IDL communicate more effectively with the public about this program's functions. It should also help clarify confusion about public trust land versus endowment land.
Dockets will begin with the abbreviation NAV instead of PUB, and our website will be updated accordingly. Other than this name change, our processes will remain the same.
Letter to Secretary Vilsack
The letter from the Land Board to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack requesting Idaho projects be considered a priority under the 10 Year Strategy of Combating the Wildfire Crisis was hand delivered to the Secretary by Governor Little last weekend.
Related to this letter's request, IDL is collaborating with the forest products industry to launch a news release early next week that includes quotes from the Governor, Trevor Stone from PotlatchDeltic, Tom Schultz from Idaho Forest Products, and Shawn Keough from Associated Logging Contractors.

One Team, One Voice
With multiple communication channels at our disposal – our website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, newsletters and individual conversations – sharing stories broadly has never been easier. However, given this abundance of communication channels, it’s crucial for our team speak with one voice. Otherwise, important messages we’re trying to communicate can be lost.
