Member highlight: Shae Roan, Idaho HealthCorps
Shae Roan is wrapping up her third term of service as an AmeriCorps member with Idaho HealthCorps. Her service has been focused on providing the 5-2-1-0 health program to students. This program teaches kids to eat five daily servings or more of fruits and vegetables, limit screen time to two hours or less per day, participate in physical activity for at least one hour a day, and drink zero sugary drinks.
Shae has had a great experience serving Idaho HealthCorps. Not only is it based on campus, where she can go to class and check-in for service afterwards, but her education award has helped pay for her college tuition. Additionally, through a service stipend, she has been able to save up some extra money to purchase a new car.
Shae's experience has varied day-to-day, with tasks ranging from emailing teachers and putting together program goody bags, to teaching about 5-2-1-0 to classrooms off campus and engaging with the community through outreach events.
Shae has had two defining AmeriCorps experiences. In her first year of service, she utilized the 5-2-1-0 teaching kit binder, but found the teaching guides, material and programming could use some refinement. In her second year, Shae, along with other AmeriCorps members, went through the entire binder and updated all the information, making it more helpful and thorough. Her second defining experience was teaching one of the 5-2-1-0 lessons to a local first grade elementary class. Afterwards the teacher reached out, indicating the kids were incorporating the lesson activities while at school, as well as encouraging each other, and the principal, to meet their water drinking goals.
Shae looks forward to another year of AmeriCorps service, continuing her work in the community and providing the 5210 health program to kids. She also looks forward to graduating with a degree in speech language pathology and a minor in health education.
