DCI investigating Iowa City Officer-involved shooting
At approximately 5:36 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, officers with the Iowa City Police Department responded to the 600 Block of Southgate Avenue to a report of a subject armed with a knife threatening others. Officers observed the subject with the knife making threatening statements and gestures.
During the investigation, two uniformed Iowa City Police Department officers discharged their firearms at the armed subject. Following the shooting, officers rendered first aid and called for emergency services.
The subject was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment of serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
There is no ongoing threat to the general public.
Per department policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is the investigating agency of the incident.
