Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague issues statement on Minneapolis shooting
Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague has issued a statement on the Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good:
I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the killing of Minneapolis resident Renee Nicole Good during a federal immigration enforcement action. My heart is with her family, her loved ones, and her community as they grieve this tragic and unnecessary loss of life.
The events reported in Minneapolis, including the heightened federal enforcement presence and the fear experienced by families and children, have had a profound impact not only there, but across the region. Immigrant communities are experiencing heightened anxiety and uncertainty, and that fear does not stop at city or state lines.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz warned that an overwhelming federal enforcement presence risked creating fear, chaos, and harm. What occurred yesterday underscores the seriousness of those concerns and the need for careful, measured, and humane approaches to public safety and enforcement.
I join calls for transparency, accountability and for a full, fair, and independent investigation into this killing. The public deserves clear answers, and justice requires that the facts be established openly and credibly. I appreciate the role of bystanders and community members whose documentation has helped bring clarity to what occurred.
This killing did not happen in Iowa City, but Minneapolis is only a few hours away, and its impact is felt here. Iowa City stands with Minneapolis. We stand with the family of Renee Nicole Good, with the broader community grieving this loss, and with immigrant families who are living with fear in this moment.
In Iowa City, we remain committed to being a welcoming community where all people feel seen, valued, and protected. We will continue to stand for dignity, care, and belonging for all who call our community home.
