Join us for an inspiring presentation with Sam Helmick, 2025–2026 President of the American Library Association and former 2023 President of the Iowa Library Association. Sam will explore how libraries safeguard democracy as trusted public spaces and civic institutions, and why they require sustained funding and strong protections for intellectual freedom.
Topics include:
Legislative challenges in Iowa around funding and censorship.
Impacts of these policies on communities, particularly marginalized residents.
How libraries foster civic engagement through outreach, mobile services, youth programming, and public events.
Sam will share practical suggestions for how voters, leaders, and organizations can support libraries. The session will include time for questions and dialogue.
Sponsored by the Iowa City Public Library and the League of Women Voters of Johnson County.
