Residence Hall move-out yields successful donation, recycling effort
During the University of Iowa’s residence hall move-out, May 13-17, 2025, the City of Iowa City teamed up with Table to Table to offer food donation, toiletry product donation, and battery recycling services for students moving out of the dormitories.
Nine drop-off locations were staged in Currier, Burge, Daum, Catlett, Mayflower, Hillcrest, Petersen, Rienow, and Slater Halls, which resulted in approximately:
2,325 pounds of unopened, non-perishable food donated
95 pounds of toiletry products donated
43 pounds of batteries recycled
The food and toiletry products were handled by Table to Table to be redistributed to community members in need.
The batteries were handled by staff from the Iowa City Landfill’s Hazardous Material Collection Facility. Batteries should not be placed in the trash or regular recycling, as they are a direct cause of landfill and recycling facility fires. In past years, battery fires have increased during student move-out and lease changeover times. This program was established in an effort to increase proper battery disposal and provide education.
Johnson County residents can properly dispose of batteries at no cost at several drop-off locations in the area. For a full list of locations, visit www.icgov.org/hhm.

The City thanks Table to Table staff and volunteers for the time, effort, and resources invested to make this program a success.
