From loading books to building community connections, Miriam, Library Assistant III at the Iowa City Public Library, reflects on her meaningful work aboard the Bookmobile.
A typical day on the BookmobileA typical day on the Bookmobile starts with getting everything ready—loading books, organizing resources, and making sure the vehicle is set up for the day's stops. We travel to different locations, such as schools, neighborhoods, or community centers. When we arrive, we help patrons find books, answer questions, and share information about other library services.
It's not just about books; it's about connecting with the community and making sure people have access to the resources they need. Each day brings something different!
The most rewarding part of the roleThe most rewarding part of my role on the Bookmobile is making the library accessible to everyone and connecting with the community. I love seeing the excitement in patrons' eyes when they find a book they love or hearing them share how much a resource we provided has helped.
The personal connections we build with the community are what make it so special—getting to know people, hearing their stories, and being a small but meaningful part of their day.
