Oaknoll used their 2024-25 Climate Action Grant to implement a compost collection system in their main campus kitchens. The goal is to divert 50,000 pounds of organic waste away from the landfill each year, starting with kitchens and expanding to include residents’ household waste.
A Climate Action Grant allowed Our Redeemer Lutheran Church to replace every remaining incandescent light with an LED upgrade, saving thousands of dollars in energy costs and cutting carbon emissions for the facility each year. The grant will also help fund efficient water heaters installed later this year.
Plated Table LLC used their Climate Action Grant to soften the corner with native plants where concrete once was. The landscape installation helps filter stormwater, provides ecosystem services, and offers year-round interest and beauty.

How do you take climate action?
My favorite ways to take climate action are through my consumer habits and my work. I shop local and buy produce that is grown in Iowa. I live a meat-less life and have found enjoyment and comfort in the art of vegetarian cooking. I also love educating the community through my service with Green Iowa AmeriCorps about the various aspects of climate action such as waste reduction and energy efficiency.
What can others do to take climate action?
Climate action and sustainability should be accessible to all. It can be simple changes in life that create lasting positive impacts on our environment, improve community well-being, and inspire others to take action. Changing your consumer habits, using public transportation, or taking advantage of resources provided by the city are great ways to take climate action. In Iowa City, residents can get a FREE home energy audit to address energy efficiency in their homes, buy local produce at the farmer’s market, and compost food waste at the curb. Climate action looks different for everyone, but when everyone takes climate action, great things can happen.
Why is it important to take climate action?
Climate action is important to me because I have firsthand witnessed the impact of climate change in relation to stronger storms growing up in eastern North Carolina. With climate action, I find fulfilment, service, and community, which are dear to my heart. I believe climate action gives us the opportunity to build a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable future.
