In 2024, at least 2 billion people are eligible to vote in major elections in 50 countries – including the United States, India, South Korea, and Mexico. Along with the excitement over widespread democratic participation, however, are concerns over the influence Artificial Intelligence (AI) may have in corrupting the process. AI-supported voter manipulation through deep fakes and phishing, misinformation campaigns, and simple information overload are serious threats on a scale that has never been seen. What exactly are these AI tactics? Have they actually been used? Can they be detected? Are there ways to stop them for the future?
