Join us for our fourth comic con for fans of all ages -- Lib Con at the Iowa City Public Library on Saturday, August 10!
Tour Artist Alley to check out and buy cool creations from local artists. Enter the Fandom Room to make a creation from your favorite fandom. Shop from vendors, take pictures using our green screen, and watch anime on the big screen. Finish the day off with our keynote speaker Amy Chu, writer for Marvel, DC, Netflix, and more! Amy will speak about her career as a comic book author and her history-making Title IX lawsuit, which brought women's soccer to Iowa City.
Join us for our August Family Night event recognizing an exciting event in Iowa's history! Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre will perform Kate Shelley’s Train Rescue, the story of an Iowa teenager who in 1881 saved a train from plunging to a watery death.
Created and performed by puppeteer Stephanie Vallez, this exciting tale unfolds in the pages of two giant pop-up books peopled with paper puppets, masks, rod marionettes, and fun low-tech special effects. It’s enhanced with Stephanie’s lovely singing voice. The story follows Kate’s life from her family’s ocean journey from Ireland through the train rescue to her adulthood.
Join us for a special Storytime all about swimming! The shallow pool area will be open to the public beginning at 10 a.m., and Storytime will begin at 10:30 a.m. We will share stories, songs, and rhymes IN THE POOL, and after Storytime, families are welcome to enjoy the pool until 11:30 a.m. Note: Thursdays are generally not open to the public. Admission will be free.
As the summer winds down and the school year starts, we will return to our themed Storytime Schedule with a different librarian performing a specialty Storytime each day of the week. Saturdays could be a Storytime performed by any librarian, so there will be a mixture of Storytime types! All Storytimes are from 10:30 to 11 a.m. each day and will typically be in the Storytime Room or Meeting Room A for larger programs, so just check the calendars and signage!
Join us every Monday for a fun Spanish Bilingual Storytime with Children's Librarian Miriam! Every week there will be a fun theme with plenty of repetition from previous weeks in order to enhance language learning. Get ready for a lot of movement with singing, dancing, activities, stories, and rhymes in both Spanish and English.
Join us for Book Babies! Let's have fun together singing, reading, and rhyming. Book Babies is a program designed to stimulate your infant's language development and is geared towards ages 0-2 years. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate as much as possible.
StoryJAM is a music and movement program designed to model, encourage, and facilitate music-making as an early literacy skill. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate as much as possible.
Preschool Stories & More is the Thursday Storytime program at the Library and will often be a guest presenter program or performer! All ages are welcome to attend Preschool Stories and More every week, but some programs may be better suited for ages 3-5. If there is no guest presenter scheduled, Mari will do a traditional Storytime!
Join us every Friday for a special Chinese Bilingual Storytime with Children's Librarian Fang! Together we will enjoy songs, rhymes, stories, and fun crafts in Chinese and English. Children of all ages and their caregivers are welcome to join us.
