Iowa City Fire Department responds to residential fire
The Iowa City Fire Department was called to 2007 Bancroft Drive at 7:58 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2024, for a carbon monoxide problem reported by MidAmerican Energy.
Responding units discovered high levels of carbon monoxide inside the home. Further investigation showed a fire had occurred within the house. While the fire self-extinguished due to a lack of oxygen, it created high levels of carbon monoxide within the home.
Firefighters discovered 13 dead dogs and two dead birds inside the home. One dog was rescued from the residence and provided life-saving care by firefighters at the scene. The Johnson County Ambulance Service provided additional care to the dog. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported and the American Red Cross provided two displaced occupants with temporary housing.
The fire caused an estimated $3,000 in damages and remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal. ICFD was assisted by the Iowa City Police Department, Iowa City Animal Services, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center, MidAmerican Energy, and the American Red Cross.
