In this month's edition of The Windshield Newsletter, we're excited to present Angela "Angie" Pilkington, our dedicated Children's Services Coordinator. Angie shares insights from her unique experiences on the Bookmobile, reflecting on its impact on Library services and the community. Keep reading as she recounts heartwarming stories and her vision for the future of the Bookmobile in Iowa City.
Can you describe a typical day working on the Bookmobile? I have been with the Bookmobile since the very beginning, but I only fill in when our regular staff is out for illness or vacation. I mostly fill in for outreach events, like Party in the Park for our Preschool Storytime stops.
What do you find most rewarding about your role on the Bookmobile? I enjoy getting out of the building and seeing more of our beautiful community. I love meeting people out & about to talk and share books and resources with them. Everyone is excited and happy to see the Bookmobile pull into our stop or going down the road! Bookmobile day is always a happy day!
Can you share a heartwarming story about the impact of the Bookmobile on someone in the community who might not otherwise have easy access to library services? Our student AIM Card actually was inspired by a stop on the Bookmobile. Our first summer I was at a stop and a child was not able to give me their information for me to look up for them to join the Summer Reading Program. I knew the child was a student in our local school system and thought if there was only a way for our two databases to work together this child would be leaving the Bookmobile with books and signed-up for the summer program—both of which could have a huge impact on their life. I made it my mission to get every child in Iowa City a card and did so with the student card just because of one bookmobile stop.
Looking towards the future, how do you envision the role of the Bookmobile evolving to further enrich the Iowa City community's access to library services? I love seeing the Bookmobile out and about in Iowa City and hope that it is here for many more years!
