Senior Center hosting May events to celebrate Older American Month

The Iowa City Senior Center (ICSC) has organized a series of events to commemorate Older Americans Month. 

Established in 1963, Older Americans Month (OAM) is celebrated every May. This year’s theme, "Powered by Connection," focuses on the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of older adults — a relationship underscored by the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community.

The following is a sample of some of the programs that will be offered. A full list of programs and how to get involved can be found in the May-June 2024 Program Guide.

Movement Training for Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease:  10-11 a.m. Wednesdays, May 1- Aug 28 in the Senior Center’s Assembly Room.

Ukulele Friends: 1-2:30 p.m Wednesdays, in room 305 at the Senior Center.

Intergenerational Chess Group: 1-4 p.m. Sundays in room 311.

Thinking FAST to Recognize and Prevent Stroke: 10-11 a.m. May 6, in room 308 at the Senior Center.

The American Experience Through Poetry: 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays, May 7- June 11, in room 311 at the Senior Center.

'Away From Her’ at FilmScene: 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 7 p. m. at FilmScene.

Watercolor Techniques Workshop: 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays, May 9- June 20, in room G07 at the Senior Center.

AARP Driver Safety: 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. May 10, in room 302 at the Senior Center.

Family Folk Machine Concert: 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at the Englert Theatre.

Nature Connections, Welcoming the Brood 13: 2-3 p.m., May 14, in room 302 at the Senior Center.

Some Ground to Stand On Film Screening and Discussion: 2- 3 p.m. May 16, in room 302 at the Senior Center.

Building Inclusive Communities for Seniors, International Perspective on Housing and Care: 12 – 1 p.m. May 17, in room 302 at the Senior Center.

Expand our Understanding of Dementia Risk Factors to Reach Optimal Aging: 2- 3 p.m. May 21 and May 28 in room 302 at the Senior Center.

Lead Reduction Program: 10-11 a.m. May 23, in room 308 at the Senior Center. 

Voices of Experience Concert and Ribbon Cutting: 2-3:30 p.m. May 23, in the Senior Center’s Assembly Room.

Becoming Elder: 1- 2:30 p.m., May 24, in room 302.

Environmental Book Club with Green Iowa AmeriCorps: 4-5:30 p.m. May 29, in room 302.

The Iowa City Senior Center’s vision is to extend social involvement and end social isolation for people aged 50+.  This year, the ICSC has a full lineup of programs to help people stay active, curious, and connected.
