City parking rates to increase for first time in 11 years
On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the Iowa City Council approved an increase in parking rates in Iowa City, marking the first time rates have increased since 2013. The changes will take effect July 1, 2024.
First-hour free parking in ramps will remain and will be extended to both Chauncey Swan Ramp and Harrison Street Ramp, which previously did not offer this discount. The increase impacts street parking and parking ramp fees, as well as parking tickets. The rates for parking permits will not change.
This increase comes as maintenance costs for parking facilities have seen a significant increase over 11 years. Current revenue from parking fees covers only 22% of the Parking Division’s budget.
Below is a list of the increases approved by council:
Ramp parking will be $2 an hour, up from $1
Metered street parking in the Central Business District will be $3 an hour, up from $1.50, and will be $1.50 up from $.75 or $1.00 in outlying areas
Parking fines have also increased and are listed below. The fine scale for new tickets related to expired meters or commercial loading zones resets each July 1st.
Expired meter:
First offense: warning
Second: $10, up from $7
Third: $15, up from $12
Fourth: $20, up from $15
Fifth: $30, up from $20
Sixth or more: $40, up from $25
Parking in commercial loading zone
First offense: $25, stays the same
Each additional offense per year: $40.
Unauthorized parking in accessible parking spaces
$200, matching State law
