"Sunday Fun Days" is a weekly program tailored specifically for children and their families.The activities are available in the Library's Storytime Room for families to drop in any time between 2 and 4 p.m. each Sunday. The projects are perfect for younger patrons of the Library and are sure to foster a love for reading and learning.
February 4:Sunday Funday: Rocket Launchers for Mae Jemison Make a paper rocket that is ready to launch in honor of Mae C. Jemison, the first African American woman to travel in space.
February 18: Sunday Funday: Ashley Bryan Beautiful Blackbird In honor of the author, storyteller, and puppeteer, Ashley Bryan, we will be creating a blackbird craft inspired by his picture book, "Beautiful Blackbird."
February 25:Sunday Fun Day: Howardena Pindell Collage Make a paper collage in the style of modern artist Howardena Pindell. We'll glue together layers of paper dots to create our own work of colorful, textural, abstract art.
Recognize Black History Month by learning about an African American STEM pioneer and creating a craft that celebrates his legacy! First, we’ll read Rooting for Plants: "Rooting for Plants: The Unstoppable Charles S. Parker, Black Botanist and Collector" by Janice N. Harrington, then we'll create a laminated bookmarks with pressed plants!
Tweens are invited to a monthly book club to discuss graphic novels. We'll be talking about a different book each month and doing activities based on them. Plus, cookies will be served! For the February meeting, we'll discuss “Swim Team” by Johnnie Christmas. The work presents an opportunity for readers to reflect on both typical childhood issues as well as the systemic issues the United States has faced for centuries such as the lack of access to pools and resources for Black athletes.
We will get to know famous Expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. We will read the Caldecott and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award-winning picture book, “Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.” Then, we will experiment with his art style with some art projects!
Children of all ages and their families are invited to come to the Storytime Room with the goal of making homemade valentines for all of the residents of Melrose Meadows, a local senior living community. We will have all of the creative supplies needed and a bit of information about the residents to help you make a custom valentine from the heart that will be sure to make someone's Valentine's Day extra special this year! We will deliver the Valentines next week when we visit Melrose Meadows on the ICPL Bookmobile!
Join us for a splendid celebration of the Lunar New Year of Dragon! Together we will enjoy a delightful dragon and lion dance show presented by APAPA (Eastern Iowa Chapter of Asian and Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association), and a special Kung Fu performance by martial arts coach Dan (Sharon) Song! After the performance, Sharon will lead a family friendly mini Kung Fu lesson to wish everyone good health and vigor in the year of dragon! Happy New Year! Gong Xi Gong Xi!
