MLK Day of Service 2024 postponed due to weather
Due to dangerously cold temperatures, all MLK Day of Service events have been postponed. Events will be rescheduled for February as part of Black History Month.
Original press release from Jan. 8, 2024:
Join the Iowa City community for an indoor Day of Service in Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024!
Iowa City's Day of Service will begin with a Peace March at 9:30 a.m., starting from United Action for Youth at Eastdale Plaza, 1700 S First Ave., No. 14, and walking to Mercer Park Aquatic Center, 2701 Bradford Drive. After the Peace March there will be a celebratory program in the Mercer Park Gymnasium, including entertainment performances, community speakers, and a free lunch. Several service-based activities for youth and adults will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., including painting and decorating Little Libraries to be placed in the community and creating Literacy Kits with United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties. Parking is available on-site. Individuals of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend!
This event is part of the Iowa City community's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration of Human Rights Week, a collaborative effort between the City of Iowa City, the Black Voices Project, the University of Iowa, and numerous nonprofit agencies. For more information about the week, visit our MLK Day website here.
Legislation signed in 1983 designated the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a federal holiday. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a National Day of Service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Each year, MLK Day of Service is observed as a "day on, not a day off." MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."
Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all City of Iowa City-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in these events, please contact the Office of Equity and Human Rights at 319-356-5022 or email humanrights@iowa-city.org.
