Iowa City Transit advises passengers to prepare for potential winter storm impacts
As the season’s first major winter storm moves toward the region, Iowa City Transit is preparing to minimize disruptions and delays to the extent possible.
Iowa City Transit is focused on the safety of our passengers and staff, particularly in light of the potential for high winds and heavy, wet snow that may impact portions of the area starting Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.
Plans are in place to operate a regular weekday schedule Monday, Jan. 8, through Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024, the forecasted duration of the storm. Depending on the impact of the storm, it may be necessary for Iowa City Transit to modify service as conditions change.
Stay informed and travel safely
While every effort will be made to continue operating bus service throughout the city, customers may experience delays or detours on their routes in the event of extreme winter weather conditions. Customers are advised to plan accordingly and check the Transit app for timely updates on service.
For the latest travel information, visit the Transit app prior to starting your trip. In the event of delays or service adjustments, Iowa City Transit will provide the most current service information via the Transit app, which delivers travel advisories for your specific trip. Other services such Google Maps may not provide updates as timely and are not recommended for trip planning during the storm.
Build additional time into your trip. While buses typically get around better in the snow than passenger vehicles due to their weight, their ability to maintain a schedule is heavily influenced by traffic conditions and other vehicles on the road.
Stairs, flooring, and platforms can be slippery, so please use caution when walking along wet surfaces or any outdoor surface exposed to the weather. Use extra care when boarding or exiting buses and trains.
Report slippery or unsafe conditions to bus operators and City staff.
Dress for the cold temperatures. Do your best to limit skin exposure and preserve heat.
