At 2:09 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, Iowa City Police responded to a report of a sexual assault. The victim reported being attacked by a man while walking near the alley of the 200 Block of South Van Buren Street approximately half an hour earlier.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Alex Stricker at 319-356-5456, AStricker@iowa-city.org, or using the Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers information below.
Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when walking, particularly at night.
Whenever possible, walk home at night in pairs or groups.
Stick to well-lit and heavily traveled streets.
If walking alone, try to avoid distractions such as talking on your phone. Have your phone in your hand or easily accessible with 911 on speed dial. Know your location - street names, intersections, or nearby businesses - to give directions in an emergency.
This incident is being actively investigated by the Iowa City Police Department and we are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5275. In addition, anyone in that area with security cameras is asked to review their recordings and contact the Iowa City Police Department with any potential footage or information about this incident.
