At 12:58 p.m., Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, Iowa City Police responded to the intersection of Highway 6 East and Boyrum Street for a multi-vehicle crash.
An investigation showed Kristina Pearson, 30, of Wellman, was driving north on Boyrum Street when her vehicle was hit by a truck driven eastbound on Highway 6 by Drake Brezina, 24, of Riverside. Pearson's vehicle then collided with a third vehicle.
Pearson and a passenger were transported via ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to be treated for injuries suffered in the crash. Pearson died of her injuries later that day. The passenger in Pearson's vehicle remains in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.
Brezina was cited for a red light violation. The crash remains under investigation and additional charges are possible. No other information is available at this time.
