Celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day with traditional foods, cultural activities, and learning stations
Celebrate and honor Indigenous Peoples' Day! Great Plains Action Society, the Iowa City Parks & Recreation Department, the Office of Equity and Human Rights, and the Human Rights Commission will be celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Park Lodge at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, 579 McCollister Blvd. Weather permitting, this event will be held outdoors.
The focus of this event is to celebrate and bring awareness to Native American culture, to correct mythology, and bring light to the challenges within the Native American community, including political issues, land acquisitions, the missing and murdered Indigenous woman campaign, and the misuse of Native Americans in school and team mascots.
The event will include:
Free traditional Native American food
A cultural celebration
Learning activities for children
Informative conversation about the current climate of the Native American community
