"Never Give Up: A Prairie Family's Story" by Tom Brokaw is a deeply personal narrative that sheds light on the author's roots in South Dakota. The story centers around the author's father, Red Brokaw, a hard-working man who left school in the third grade but never stopped striving for success. The book reveals Red's journey from working in the family hotel, the Brokaw House, to becoming a foreman on major dam projects. This saga also offers a poignant love story between Red and Jean, who face financial struggles and the challenges of raising three sons amidst the hardships of the Depression era. The family's motto of "never give up, never complain" weaves the narrative together, underscoring the values of perseverance and resilience that defined their lives.
Scott Chantler's "Squire & Knight"is a captivating fantasy that cleverly flips the traditional knight-dragon trope to focus on the overlooked Squire. With modern humor and a well-crafted plot, this tale of the Squire’s investigative journey into the mysteries of a cursed village offers an engaging read. The comical dynamic between the Squire and his bumbling boss, Sir Kelton, is delightfully depicted and provides a fresh perspective on the knight-squire relationship. Chantler's immersive world-building and the Squire's significant character development further enhance the narrative. Combining unique twists, compelling characters, and a well-paced plot, "Squire & Knight" is an enchanting exploration of unlikely heroism, making it a must-read for fantasy lovers.
