Saturday, April 22, 1 to 4 p.m.
We celebrate the earth every day, but especially on Earth Day. Join for an afternoon of arts and entertainment. This inclusive event has something for everyone, across cultures, and generations. Festivities will include the ICPL Bookmobile, crafts, games, exhibits, readings, nature-inspired demonstrations, giveaways and more. Find the fun on the Pentacrest (East of Old Cap) and in Macbride Hall (on the ground floor). This event is presented by the UI Office of Sustainability and the Environment, in partnership with UI Pentacrest Museums and Public Space One.
The Association of Bookmobiles and Outreach (ABOS) will celebrate National Library Week (April 23-29) with a virtual Bookmobile parade! Library staff shared some of their favorite things about working on the ICPL Bookmobile Team, and we would love to hear your favorite things about services too! Follow the ICPL online to see the Iowa City Public Library in the parade!
“My favorite thing about the Bookmobile is propping open all of the doors when it's beautiful outside. When the doors are open, it's such a warm welcome to anyone new to come up and see what we offer. I also love seeing the joy on kids' faces when we make the rounds to community preschools and daycares.”
Raquel, Childrens Services Assistant
“The coolest thing about the Bookmobile is showing up to a stop to be greeted by patrons who are excited to find us in a new (or new to them) location. They jump aboard looking to see what's new or hear about a reading program or the latest new catalog feature!”
Sarah, ICPL Bookmobile Aide
“I think the coolest thing about the Bookmobile is our built-in ability to change course with both the route and collections as needed to best serve our community. Also, it's really cool that we got invited to the Johnson County Fair this year!”
Heidi, Outreach Assistant
“Like a patron said this morning, the Bookmobile is "an island of hope" bringing community, conversation, and often communion as well as learning, literacy, and often levity, but also reading, resources, and often recourse to folks that may never otherwise connect with us.”
Sam, Community & Access Services Coordinator
“For me, it’s the kids and parents, walking and traveling in vehicles after school lets out, who give the fist pump signal for us to honk the airhorn as we go past, and ear to ear smiles we get in return.”
Paul, Collections Services Assistant
With over 200 attendees, Iowa City Public Library’s March 25th #fREADom to Read event was a celebration of access to information. The event spotlighed current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. Attendees reported “the program felt optimistic, positive, and energetic.” Participants of all ages were actively engaged in performance elements (including our ICPL house band!), crafts, and interactive and informative displays about books and intellectual freedom. Thank you for doing your part to support your library and the #fREADom to Read!
