The Iowa City Public Library and the Bookmobile will be observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16, 2023, with special hours of operation to honor the legacy of the civil rights leader.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile will not be in service on Monday, Jan.16.
The Downtown Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Jan. 16 for patrons to study, browse books, borrow items or have access to Library services. The Library also encourages visitors to take advantage of its wide selection of materials related to Dr. King’s life and work that can provide insight into his philosophy and contributions to American society.
During January and February, we’ll feature books in the Afrofuturism genre on the Bookmobile display. Afrofuturism differs from standard science fiction in that it centers African traditions and black identity. More broadly, Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic and philosophy of science and history exploring the intersection of the African diaspora culture with science and technology. If you haven’t read within this genre before, now’s the perfect time to check it out!
This year’s winter reading program, “Reading Makes Me Hoppy” runs December 18, 2022 - February 18, 2023 and is available to readers age 3 and up, kids through adults.
Register yourself and your family - log your reading online, pick up a gamecard from the Library, or print your own. Finish the program to receive a hot cocoa mug. Visit icpl.org/wrp for more information!
Each time you hop on the ICPL Bookmobile, you will find new items to check out! A few new items that Bookmobile staff would like to recommend to you include:
As Edith, her best friend of forty-two years who is dying of ovarian cancer spends her last days at a hospice near her, Ashley, stumbling around into heartbreak, helps Edith celebrate her life as they reminisce, hold on, and try to let go.
