As part of both Climate Fest and National Drive Electric Week, EV owners will have a chance to share with others why they love driving electric during the Sept. 24 all-electric car show!
Use this link to sign up to bring your EV Saturday morning to the Robert A. Lee parking lot, adjacent to the Farmers Market. Participating EV owners will get a special goodie bag in thanks for sharing your insights and experiences with others who hope to go electric.
Visit www.icgov.org/root4trees to apply for a Root for Trees voucher that can subsidize the purchase of a tree planted on a residential property.
In the Root for Trees program, now in its third year, Iowa City residents can receive 50% off the cost of the retail purchase price of one tree, up to $125 (a $250 tree). Vouchers for an additional discount off retail price are available for income-eligible households, up to $225 (a $250 tree).
The Root for Trees program runs from September 15, 2022, to May 15, 2023, while funding and supplies last.
City splash pads may be done for the season now, but thanks to system upgrades carried out in late summer, these sites will require less water going forward. New, more efficient controllers and above-ground features were installed for both the Wetherby Splash Pad at 2400 Taylor Drive and the Fairmeadows Splash Pad at 2500 Miami Drive. The resulting water savings will add up to an estimated 50,400 gallons per day!
We prize locally-produced food, beer, crafts, and art -- why not add local lumber to that list? When trees have to be cut down after storms, pests, or disease, they can often be salvaged as wood for furniture, cabinetry, flooring, and more.
By request, tree removal companies can transport recently felled trees to one of three Johnson County sawyers that mill urban lumber. Purchasing urban lumber for projects is possible at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore at 2401 Scott Blvd. More information about urban lumber programs and benefits can be found on the Iowa DNR website or this City Channel video.
Cities establish greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories to gather data and analyze it -- seems straightforward enough, right? As with many climate efforts, though, things have a way of getting complicated. There are different kinds of GHG inventories, and each tells you something a little different.
Join Recycling Coordinator Jane Wilch and Climate Action Coordinator Sarah Gardner for an interactive discussion of Iowa City’s own GHG inventory efforts, which are the longest running citywide inventories in the state.
As with previous “Speaking of” discussions, this is a chance to ask questions and learn some useful information along the way.
Register through Zoom to take part in the virtual discussion at noon on September 19.
In Farm Cycle, a yearly benefit event for Iowa City Bike Library, participants ride (and taste!) their way across numerous local farms, enjoying seasonal foods prepared by a local chef at each stop. Join the fun on Sunday, Sept. 25 and receive custom made fiber art, designed by a local artist and screen printed with natural plant dyes. Find the registration page online.
