Thursday, August 11 10 a.m. to noon Chauncey Swan Green Space
All good things must come to an end, but that doesn’t mean we can’t go out with splash…or blast! Join us for the Last Splash of Summer event anytime between 10 a.m. and noon on Thursday, August 11, in the Chauncey Swan outdoor area to play with bubbles, experience a real foam blaster, and other fun, messy, and wet activities. The Fire Department will be there with fire safety activities as well!
Also, don't forget to get your Summer Reading Program gamecards back to the Library or Bookmobile by August 14 to collect your prize!
Tuesday, August 16 4 to 6 p.m. Meeting Room A
We decided to sneak in a little more fun before school starts! For our August Family Night event, children in grades K-6 are invited to create a Poké Ball terrarium craft! This is a drop-in activity any time between 4-6 p.m. while supplies last, but we will need to stagger larger crowds to accommodate the use of tools, supplies, and instructional support. We will be using tools best suited for school-aged kids. One craft per child will be available.
Did you know that every K-12 student in the Iowa City Community School District has an ID that functions as a library card for the Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty public libraries? Your ICCSD Student ID number is your library card to the three public libraries! At each library, the ID - called an AIM card - can be used to check out books or books on CD. Students can have three books checked out at any one time on their AIM card, and there are no late fines or fees for lost items.
Students can also use their AIM card to access our digital collections of movies, e-books, or e-audiobooks online, with no limit on the number of items they can check out. It's easy - there's no password required to log in. They just need the number on the front of their AIM card, which is their student ID number. Visit the AIM Information page to find out more!
The Summer Reading Program is winding down, but we have a year-round reading program for kids five and under! 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten encourages all families and caregivers to read one thousand books with their children before they enter kindergarten.
Studies have shown that families that start reading aloud to their children at birth help to strengthen their language skills and build their vocabulary – two important tools for beginning to learn to read when they enter kindergarten.
Go here for more information and register today! Don’t forget to stop in and claim your prizes as you make your way through 1,000 Books! Or read more about the 1KBBK program on our blog.
