On April 29, 2022, the University of Iowa will welcome a remarkable new tree to the Pentacrest: a sapling propagated from the old chestnut tree that grew behind the Amsterdam annex where Anne Frank and her family hid for 716 days during the Holocaust.
Kids and families, join us for a film screening about the life of Anne Frank, which we know about today from her famous diary. Following the film, help the Library create a collaborative art installation by decorating a leaf with your reflections on peace, hope, and Anne's resilient spirit.
Participants can also take home a kit that includes supplies to make their own diary, a booklist, more information for kids on Anne Frank, and a map with the other locations of saplings in the U.S.
El Día de las y los Niños/El Día de los Libros, also known simply as Día, is a celebration of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30. This year, visit the Library to find fun programming and lots of great bilingual books to celebrate!
Families are invited to come get messy and work together for this craftivity! We will use a simple paper mache recipe and balloon to create a homemade piñata! We will send you home with a bag of goodies that can be added once your piñata is dry and finished at home!
Join us for a special Babywearing Salsa Program! With your little one snuggled in close in a baby carrier, learn basic Salsa dancing steps and have fun dancing to the music while you bond with your baby. Please bring a baby carrier if you have one. We will have some on hand if needed. No experience necessary. Let's Salsa!
Come to the Library to celebrate El Día de los Niños, which is a celebration of many children, many cultures, and many books. We will begin with a parade of books and book characters around the Library. Come dressed up as your favorite character, or pick out your favorite book to parade around the Library with! After the book parade, we will sing songs, share stories and rhymes, and celebrate being a kid! All ages welcome.
Iowa City Public Library, in collaboration with the Library’s Friends Foundation and Iowa City Parks & Recreation, bring to Iowa City a brand new BookWalk installation each month in Willow Creek Park, located at 1117 Teg Drive. BookWalk is an interactive way for readers of all ages to enjoy storytime and the outdoors.
This month’s story is “We All Play” by Julie Flett, a picture book that celebrates diversity and the interconnectedness of nature through an Indigenous perspective. Readers will encounter birds who chase and chirp, bears who wiggle and wobble, owls who peek and peep, and a diverse group of kids who love to do the same, shouting: We play too! / kimêtawânaw mîna! Take a walk at Willow Creek Park this month to discover
