Check It Out - February 2022

On Thursday, March 3, join us at 7 p.m. for Local Libraries LIT (listen, initiate, talk) - a virtual program featuring author and essayist, R.O. Kwon.

Kwon was born in South Korea and has lived most of her life in the United States. As an author and essayist, her writing explores identity, sexuality, and the comforts and complications of religion. Registrations are required. Register for the program here

On Friday, March 4th from 5-7 p.m., adults age 21 and over are invited to sample and buy, adult beverages during this fun event hosted by Hy-Vee's Wine & Spirits department. Distributors of wine, craft beer, and spirits will offer samples of their products during this casual drop-in event at the HyVee at First and Rochester Avenue in Iowa City. A generous portion of the evening’s sales will be donated to the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation to benefit the Iowa City Public Library.

Our new catalog has been live on our website since last fall and allows library users to search the Library collection as well as manage their individual library accounts.

The new catalog will be officially launched on March 1, fully replacing the former catalog. If you receive preferred search email notifications or have lists in the old catalog, you will need to transfer these to the new catalog. Instructions on how to move these to the new catalog are on our Catalog FAQ page.

Come learn about hoopla — ICPL’s new free digital service that includes music, movies, television, eBooks, audiobooks, and comics. We’ll show you how to sign up for hoopla, install the hoopla app on your device, and how to check out, stream, and download titles from its collection.

Note: hoopla is available for use by residents of our primary service area: Iowa City, Hills, Lone Tree, University Heights, and rural Johnson County.

March marks the 2-year anniversary of the first COVID-19 shut-downs.
We want to provide you with an opportunity to start processing what you've been through. Take some time to journal on your own and we’ll meet in person at the Library on March 29 to share our reflections. For some prompts to get you started and more information, check out the full program description.

Registration is optional. Registrants can stop by the Info Desk to pick up a journal and pen.

Books competing in the 2022 tournament fall into eight categories; four for the children’s brackets and four for the teen/adult brackets. The 2022 categories are as follows:

CHILDREN’S: Nonfiction, Picture Books, Super Series, and Graphic Novels.

TEENS/ADULTS: Short Reads, Battles of the Banneds, All You Need Is Love, and Realistic Fiction.

Stop by the Library to pick up a bracket form and view the brackets on display in the first-floor Library Gallery starting Monday, February 28.
Fill out and return your bracket predictions by Sunday, March 13, for a chance to win great prizes.

The first round for in-person and online voting starts Monday, March 7.
