This effort builds on a Climate Action Grant awarded to DVIP this year to put a solar array on the shelter by providing funding for additional panels.
Donations can also be made through this fundraiser web page now.

How do you take climate action?
I try to do my part in all aspects of life when it comes to climate action—from making sure my lights are off when not in use, to conserving water and recycling. I also started using my bicycle a lot more to reduce the City vehicle emissions footprint.
The biggest change I have implemented in my life has been reducing the amount of meat products I consume. COVID and lockdown have allowed me to hone my cooking skills, which has made meal prepping quite easy. This, in turn, led to less takeout and more control of what comes in and goes out of my own little world.
As the Outreach Coordinator with Green Iowa AmeriCorps (GIA) I try to take part in community activities to spread awareness as well as educate the public on the policies Iowa City is trying to implement to be more sustainable, and the role each member plays in the big picture.
What can others do to take climate action?
People need to be aware of the impact they have on the ecosystem. There are small things and big things you can do to impact the climate. You can start by using reusable bags when you go shopping (which is now allowed in grocery stores again). You can also take the community Climate Action Pledge, which is found on the City's web site.
The greatest areas of potential impact are in transportation and in energy efficiency of existing homes. Increasing the energy efficiency in these homes lead to reduction in the demand for for fossil fuels. GIA offers free energy audits for residents.
Why does climate action matter to you?
There is no place like home, and Earth is the home for all of humanity. Having a healthy living environment allows us to flourish and enjoy all that's around us. I love the outdoors–especially fishing. Ensuring the health of our planet is the best gift we can offer future generations.
