Community Connection: Iowa Freedom Riders & Black Voices Project host Juneteenth Celebration with march and events
Community Connectionis a video series that highlights different people and organizations in our community to discuss the issues that are important to our residents. Juneteenth is a celebration that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. While Iowa City's annual gathering was canceled due to COVID-19, a new event is being organized in light of the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 20, 2020, beginning with a march from 1 - 3 p.m. that will begin at the Pentacrest. That will be followed by a family-friendly gathering at 3 p.m. that will feature food, discussions, and entertainment back at the Pentacrest. This event is a collaboration between the Iowa Freedom Riders and the Black Voices Project.
