CDC releases tips on grocery shopping during COVID-19 pandemic
With grocery stores still open and serving residents as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a guide on how to safely grocery shop.
Some local grocery stores have implemented their own additional guidelines to help keep shoppers safe. Please contact your favorite stores directly for more information or concerns, and follow their guidance to the best of your ability.
CDC recommendations
Avoid shopping if you have a fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Have someone shop for you, or have groceries ordered online to be dropped off at your home.
If possible, order food online for home delivery or curbside pickup. Most Iowa City area grocery stores now have online grocery shopping capabilities.
Only visit the grocery store in person when you absolutely need to.
Go during hours when fewer people will be there, like early morning or late evening.
Stay at least six feet away from others while shopping.
Wear a cloth face covering while shopping.
If you are at higher risk of severe illness due to an underlying condition or age, check with your grocery store to see if they have special shopping hours for people at high risk.
Disinfect the shopping cart.
Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Use touchless payment if possible. If you must use card or cash, disinfect your hands as quickly as possible. Also wash your hands when home.
