City and ICPL staff have been monitoring the evolving situation regarding COVID-19. Currently, the Bookmobile is in service and visiting stops on our regular schedule.
As always, Bookmobile service cancellations will be posted on our website. Patrons may also call the Library at 319-356-5200 with questions. We will do our best to keep the public informed of any changes.
Iowa City daycares and preschools get a boost on early literacy
The Bookmobile regularly visits nine preschool and daycare facilities throughout Iowa City. Every Wednesday morning, children’s librarians Mari and Becky bring storytime to children at local schools. Classes receive a 30 minute storytime combining stories, rhymes, music and movement; all are designed to support childhood development and early literacy skills.
After storytime, classes are invited to visit the Bookmobile where each child can select one book to check out and bring back for use in their classroom. Becky reports, "Kids love picking out their own book, and they are so excited to show the librarians and their friends which one they chose! The Bookmobile programs make learning fun."
Each month, the Bookmobile visits 12 classrooms, allowing around 240 children access to literacy enrichment and Bookmobile resources. 1380 books have circulated from these outreach sites from the start of the school year through February.
