Picture books to read and celebrate Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month, an annual celebration of the contributions of women to American history. Anytime is a good time, however, to introduce kids to some important female historical figures. Help spark the dreams of young girls by sharing these high-quality biographical picture books with the kids in your life. Visit our blog to see Anne W.'s full curated list of books.
Take a (spring) break at the library!
Spring break is coming - and that means we have a full week of programs to help entertain and engage our young patrons. We also want to remind students to use their new Student AIM cards to access Library materials.
Spring is finally here and we are all ready to celebrate, so we are throwing a special drag storytime party! Fun costumes are encouraged, and we will have silly props available for photos. We will read LGBTQ stories, sing and dance with some local drag kings and queens.
Start your reading ritual with two early literacy programs
Belly Babies is a pre-birth early literacy program designed to help families start a reading ritual before the baby arrives. Research suggests that your baby can hear you and your partner's voice as early as 23 weeks. Families at any stage are welcome, whether it's your first or later child.
Download the Belly Babies Reads bookmark or pick one up at the Library to participate. After 50 read alouds, bring in your completed bookmark for a prize.
Families who read aloud to their children early help to strengthen language skills and build vocabulary - two important tools for beginning to learn to read.
ICPL, with the generous support of Pearson and the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, runs the program 1000 Books Before Kindergarten to encourage families to read aloud to their children early and often.
