Commemorating Black History
ICPL has a hidden treasure upstairs on the 2nd floor—our Black History books collection, most of which you can find in the 973.00496s. Every book we buy for this section is guaranteed to be fascinating. If you want to dig deeper than the traditional Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X stories, start digging through this list of excellent books. All books on this list were published in 2019 and 2020.
Check out this special book list by Melody, staff librarian, and then check out some of these great titles.
Meet Our Staff: Anne Wilmoth
As fun as it is to imagine a place where books appear magically, it falls to special librarians called "selectors" to choose what materials make their way to our shelves. This month we introduce you to Anne Wilmoth, Librarian in Children's and Technical Services.
What is a selector?
I sift through all the materials being published and select the most quality, most popular items for our community. I select juvenile fiction and nonfiction. That means children's chapter books, children's nonfiction, children's ebooks and children's audiobooks.
What's your favorite thing about selecting?
There's nothing I don't like about it - it's so fun! I love seeing everything that's fresh and new coming out. It's so exciting when you look at the shelf and it's all stuff that you chose. I also love when people ask for something and you're able to provide exactly what they're looking for.
What do you wish the public knew about what goes on behind the scenes?
We're working really hard to pick the best things. We can't have everything so we're trying to pick the best, most representative, most exciting items. If people want something we don't have they can fill out a purchase request on the website or talk to us at the children's desk. We will always do our best on those!
