Raising Anti-Racist White Kids: A Conversation for All of Us
Dr. Jennifer Harvey, professor of religion at Drake University, will be at the Iowa City Public Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, to discuss her book, “Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America.”
We live in one of the most racially diverse societies in the world, but it’s plagued by inequity and injustice. Should parents teach white kids to be “colorblind” or should they teach them to notice race? How should adults address white privilege and discuss race without making children feel bad about being white?
Harvey will map the common problems relative to nurturing anti-racist white identity. These issues impacts adults of every racial group in the U.S. as much as they do young people. Whether you’ve been a white kid, are helping raise white kids, or have children in your life who are friends with white kids, this reading and conversation is for you.
