Update: This newsletter is being reissued to correct the Thanksgiving holiday dates when the bookmobile will not be in service.
On September 7, 2016, the Iowa City Public Library Board of Trustees held a special meeting to award a contract to Summit Body Works in Commerce City, Colo., to build the Library's Bookmobile. Now our beloved mobile library celebrates three years of service.
"I’m delighted with the relationships that have been established between Bookmobile staff and patrons," Kara says. "Whenever I substitute on the Bookmobile, patrons always ask after the regular staff person."
"I've run into Bookmobile users outside of work and it's fun to see their faces light up in recognition before we squeeze in a quick chat about new books," Stacey adds.
"During our first summer of operation I was scheduled on the Bookmobile to work all the Thursday later afternoon/early evening Parties in the Park," Paul recalls. "For me this was a magical time as the service was quite new and still kind of an unknown to the wider community. Those who stopped by shared a sense of wonderment and excitement at this brand new thing available to them or in recalling fond childhood memories of visiting a bookmobile back in their own home towns. Plus it showed me many parts of Iowa City I was blissfully unaware of even though I’ve lived here for quite some years."
Kara wrote a blog post summarizing how the Bookmobile came to be. You can read it here.
We made the news!
We kicked off our fall schedule on Monday, August 26.
We were happy to be back on the road after a short break and even happier to see the friends we've made on our stops. We made a few new friends, too; specifically local media who featured the Bookmobile in multiple stories about the traveling Library service.
