Parents expecting the pitter-patter of little feet are invited to the Iowa City Public Library’s Belly Babies Special Event.
Join us in the Children’s Room from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, for information and activities for parents-to-be. Attendees will learn about the five early literacy practices, take home songs and rhymes to do with baby at home, and register for ICPL’s Belly Baby Reads program. They’ll also partake in specialized 30-minutes sessions about prenatal yoga, reading rituals, breastfeeding and support, and doulas and baby wearing.
Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Attendees will also have a chance to win one of three door prizes, including a Prairie Lights gift card to start your baby’s library, a SKIP Hop Pronto Changing Station, and a Baby Einstein 5-in-1 Journey of Discovery Activity Gym.
Belly Babies is free to attend, but registration is encouraged.
ICPL launches new book club for tweens
The Iowa City Public Library is pleased to introduce a new book club for tween readers: Panels and Pizza.
Students in third through sixth grades are invited to attend monthly meetings during which we’ll read and discuss graphic novels. We’ll talk about old favorites, new titles, and occasionally plan activities around our monthly selection. We’ll also have pizza.
Our first Totally Tweens: Panels and Pizza meeting will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, in the Storytime Room. We will discuss The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell. Check out a copy now and be ready to share your thoughts with us!
All Totally Tween events are for students in third through sixth grades.
Mark your calendar: Family Fort Night Sept. 17
Have you ever wanted to cozy up with a book in your own little fort in the Library? Now's your chance!
The whole family is invited to create a fort somewhere in the Children's Room to share stories together during Family Fort Night on Tuesday, September 17. Building time is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and forts can stay up until 8:30 p.m. In addition to the building and the stories, we will have a contest to determine the most well-constructed fort!
We will provide fort-making materials, but you are welcome to bring your own, too.
