We had a wonderful summer at ICPL and thank everyone for their participation in this year's Summer Reading Program. Even though reading game cards have been traded for spiral notebooks, your time at the Library shouldn't end. We may not be on the school supply list, but we're a valuable back to school resource! From writing help to research assistance, ICPL has the materials and the resources to make the 2019-20 school year a great one!
Everyone knows we have books, but did you know we have computers, printers and copiers available for public use, as well as equipment you can check out and take home, including laptops and wi-fi hotspots? We even have drop-in Tech Help!
Our online resources are a treasure trove of information just waiting to be discovered! Categories include academic research, biographies, language learning, magazine articles, and test preparation. Some resources can be accessed at home with an ICPL Library Card; all are available for use within the Library.
Don't forget our greatest resources: librarians! Stop by the Info Desk during Library hours with your questions. If you aren't able to visit the Library, give us a call at 319-356-5200, send an email or start a Live Chat.
Back to School Book Recommendations
Whether it's starting school for the first time, walking into the building as a new student, or gearing up for another year after summer vacation, the first day can be tough. Check out staff recommendations for First Day of School books that could make the transition smoother for young students.
Back to School: A Global Journey by Maya Ajmera and John D. Ivanko -- Paul says the book caught his eye "because it shows what it’s like to go back to school around the globe."
Angie calls The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes "an adorable, fun new book about a little guy’s great first day of kindergarten. This delightful book will help boost the confidence in your new Kindergarten student as they head off for the big day."
Angie also recommends The Last Last-Day-of-Summer by Lamar Giles. "Otto and Sheed inadvertently freeze time in their town while looking for one last summer vacation adventure and have to work to unfreeze it so school will start!"
Meredith loves We Don't Eat Our Classmates! by Ryan T. Higgins, calling it laugh out loud funny. "Parents won't tire of reading Penelope T. Rex's antics over and over again, and little ones nervous about starting school will delight in her story, too."
Not ready for school? Curl up with a popular summer read!
Publishers are releasing their fall book lists, which we love, but there are still some titles we've yet to cross off our To Be Read list! Luckily, a great book is a wonderful read no matter what time of year you check it out, which is why we're pleased to present ICPL's Top 10 Fiction and Nonfiction Books read by participants in the Adult Summer Reading Program!
