Iowa City's Pride Week may be over, but Pride Month is still going strong, and we have plenty of book recommendations to keep the party going.
"Characters finding themselves is a familiar theme in YA, and more and more titles have teens making discoveries about their sexual orientation and gender identification," Youth Services Librarian Brian Visser says. "And if they're not finding themselves, they're falling in love -- sweet romances with boys meeting boys and girls meeting girls."
You can check out Brian's selection of new YA fiction and graphic novel suggestions here, as well as additional LGBTQ book lists. We have recommendations from poetry and memoirs, to picture books and nonfiction.
Read With Me Kits bring storytime to you!
Did you know you can bring the excitement of an Iowa City Public Library storytime home with our Read With Me Kits?
The Library has more than 40 kits available to check out. Each kit was built around a specific theme and contains five books, a storytime starter sheet, and an activity item that coincides with the theme. Activity items vary by kit. Themes include opposites, trains, unicorns, construction, family, cats, and shapes. Read With Me Kits are a great addition to a child’s story routine. They can also supplement a preschool or child care center's reading program.
The kits are shelved in the Storytime Kit collection in the Children’s Room. You’ll also find Read With Me Sensory Kits in the same area. Designed to make storytimes accessible and enjoyable for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, sensory disorders, or other special needs, these kits include books, props, music CDs, puppets, flannel boards, fidget toys, and information on presenting Sensory Storytimes. While the kits were created with a specific audience in mind, they are available for all patrons to check out.
