It is very exciting to
work on the bookmobile. Each day is different - we have lots of regulars we
look forward to seeing, but there are always new people to meet who are
visiting the bookmobile for the first time. Materials are always being
rotated and refreshed, too, so there are always new books and movies to
discover - I find lots of good things for myself, as well as being able to
recommend these fresh materials to our patrons!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT
THE BOOKMOBILE?
I love driving the
bookmobile. It's pretty much impossible not to look cool while piloting that
beast. I also love how excited children are about the bookmobile - even for a
lot of adults, it's a pretty exciting novelty. I mean, it's a bus full of books
that comes right to your neighborhood!
SHARE A BOOKMOBILE
MEMORY WITH US.
This is not really a
memory, but sort of an ongoing experience that I look back on fondly and also
look forward to excitedly from week to week: our visit to Breckenridge Estates.
There are tween-age kids there who are so excited about books they are
waiting for us to pull up each week, and several kids there check out a
knee-high stack of books regularly. They keep us very busy at that stop, and I
just love how enthusiastic they are about reading.
WHAT DO YOU WANT
PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT THE BOOKMOBILE?
I want people to know how convenient the bookmobile is. You can
return your downtown items there instead of searching for a place to park
downtown. It's also a much more accessible collection as far as browsing is
concerned - we have a smaller collection and it's only the best items, so you
can quickly find something good.
Visit the Bookmobile Oct. 26 at Halloween Spooktacular
The 72nd annual City of Iowa City Halloween Parade and Carnival -- Halloween Spooktacular -- will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Mercer Park.
This free event will kick off with a costume parade around the park and continue with both indoor and outdoor activities including carnival-style games, crafts, prizes, tricks, treats, performances, special visitors, and other Halloween fun.
The ICPL Bookmobile also will be on site.
All ages and abilities are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. In case of inclement weather, the parade will be canceled, but not the carnival; it will still be held inside the Mercer Park Aquatic
Center/Scanlon Gyms.
See the Bookmobile at UI's Homecoming Parade
Once again, the Bookmobile will join the Iowa City Public Library Book Cart Drill Team in the 2018 University of Iowa Homecoming Parade.
The parade will begin at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, in downtown Iowa City. See the parade route here.
More than 15,000 spectators are expected to line the city's streets to watch the parade, which will unite university students, alumni, faculty and staff with the community.
