Dubuque Street to convert one-way after Hawkeye games
Prepare for traffic changes for Hawkeye home football games, beginning Sat., Sept. 1, 2018.
Park Road bridge will open to all vehicles and pedestrians at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1. Dubuque Street will again temporarily convert to a one-way road, with two lanes of outbound traffic, after each September home Hawkeye Football game to accommodate heavy traffic leaving Iowa City.
Post Game Traffic and Access
After the game, Dubuque Street will only allow northbound, one-way traffic between Foster and Park roads. There will be no southbound traffic between Foster and Park roads during this time. Law enforcement officers will determine how long to stay one-way depending on traffic levels.
Drivers should instead use Highway 1/Dodge Street (Exit 246) to access Iowa City from I-80. Residents living north of Park Road who use Dubuque Street to access Iowa City will be directed north and will have to access Iowa City from Dodge Street/Highway 1, or other local roads.
Pre-Game Traffic and Access
Pre-game traffic on Dubuque Street will remain as-is. Drivers should be prepared for delays and fans should plan to arrive early.
Drivers traveling into Iowa City from I-80 for home Hawkeye Football games are encouraged to use alternative routes like Dodge Street (Exit 246) and Coral Ridge Ave/Highway 6 (Exit 240), or ride the Hawkeye Express train, which departs from the James Street Depot, 2435 James St., Coralville. First Avenue in Coralville (Exit 242) is currently under construction and will continue to experience heavy traffic on home game days.
The Hawkeyes will take on Northern Illinois with kickoff at 2:30 p.m. Additional game day information can be found at footballgameday.hawkeyesports.com.
Project Updates
Weather permitting, it is expected that all lanes of traffic, and sidewalks on Dubuque Street and on Park Road Bridge will open in approximately four to six weeks.
The Iowa City Gateway Project is a flood mitigation project to raise Dubuque Street while also elevating and replacing the Park Road Bridge. To receive project updates, sign up for City of Iowa City e-subscriptions, and follow the City of Iowa City on Facebook and Twitter using #ICGateway.
