Avoid fines and fees: Don't leave stuff on the curb!
With lease changeover in full swing, Iowa City residents are reminded to
deal with discarded items properly to avoid tagging and fees.
Carts and bags at the curb
Trash, recycling, and organics carts should
not be set out prior to 7 p.m. the evening before your weekly pick-up. Instead,
these items should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. the morning of pick-up and
pulled back as soon as possible after they have been
emptied.Additional bagged trash must
have a City of Iowa City trash sticker affixed. These stickers are available
for $2.50 at local grocery stores, hardware stores, and City Hall, 410 E. Washington St.
Scheduling pick up
Iowa City customers can schedule pick-up for bulk items, like furniture, by calling Solid Waste at 319-356-5151. The pick-up schedule is filling quickly and
residents should not expect to have items picked up for at least two
weeks. Pricing is available at www.icgov.org/garbage.
Fines and fees
Items left on the curb will be tagged with a 24-hour notice to remove
them.If the items remain on the curb
after 24 hours, City staff will pick them up and the following fees will be
charged to the customer’s utility bill:
Appliances: $20 each
Garbage can and bags: $2.50/each, plus $10 flat pick up fee
Equipment fees (1 hour minimum): $25.50
Labor fees (1 hour minimum): $20
Administrative fees: $25
Delayed
enforcement the week of July 30 to August 3
A week of delayed enforcement will take place between July 30 and August
3.This grace period will be limited to bulky
items only and provides a reprieve to landlords and property managers of the daily
responsibility of removing bulky items, such as couches and dressers, from the
curb. This grace period is in place to
allow property owners time to clean up, and is not an amnesty period.Beginning Monday, Aug. 6, any items,
including bulky items, remaining at the curb will be subject to immediate
removal by City crews and fees will be charged to the customer’s utility bill.
Even with delayed enforcement in place, appliances, garbage cans and
bags, and loose trash will be subject to immediate removal and the fees listed above
will be charged to the utility account holder.
