Moving? Don't throw away items, donate instead
Moving and can’t take all your stuff? Donate furniture, clothing, housewares, books and other materials you no longer need, rather than sending usable items to the landfill. Many local non-profits, agencies and businesses accept donations, or buy and consign items. View our Iowa City Area Resale and Consignment Directory for a list of locations. There are also several online resources, including local Facebook groups, where people can donate or sell items.
Those with leases up at the end of July can also donate to Rummage in the Ramp, an annual City-sponsored event that occurs as leases changeover. People are encouraged to donate items they no longer want or need. Proceeds are split between local environmental and human services non-profit groups that volunteer to work the sale.
This year's event will take place July 26 through August 4, 2018, at the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp, 415 E. Washington St. Over the last decade, this event has helped divert more than 265 tons of furniture, housewares, clothing, books and other items from the landfill. Dozens of area non-profits have shared the $168,300 collected. Learn more at icgov.org/rummageintheramp.
Rummage in the Ramp cannot store items in advance. Residents who are moving early or are ready to purge now should donate or consign elsewhere.
