Libraries Rock!, our 2018 Summer Reading Program, is in full swing with something awesome happening at the Library every day! Don't believe us? Check out our activity booklet. In the next week we have Try It Out Friday: Yoga; a double feature Monday Matinee; a Just Dance Marathon; and a special visit from our friends at Blank Park Zoo! They'll be here at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 12.
We also have great prizes to reward you for meeting your summer reading goals! Babies and toddlers receive an egg shaker after completing the
first level of their program, and a free book and entry into the grand prize drawing – a $50
gift card to Prairie Lights -- when they finish the program's second level.
The preschool
through sixth-grade game card, which participants receive after they register for the program, has two levels of prizes. The first is a
collection of food and activity coupons from Blank Park Zoo, Chili’s, Texas
Road House, Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Iowa Children’s Museum, and McDonalds,
and the choice between a pair of sunglasses or earbuds. The second prize is a
free book and an entry into the grand prize drawing for one of 10 Lego
playsets. Ten different sets will be given to 10 winners.
Register for the Summer Reading Program online, on the Bookmobile, or at the Library today!

Book recommendations: Building Better Communities
Morgan has a few recommendations from our Library's collection about communities around the world. Why not read one? You may even discover a new way to improve your community!
Growing Peace: A Story of Farming, Music, and Religious Harmony is a nonfiction account of Ugandan musician and coffee farmer J.J. Keki, who was visiting New York City during the September 11 attacks. "I love the message of this book," Morgan says. "By focusing on what unites them, instead of what divides them, this village has created an example of religious tolerance and harmony for the world."
Did you know a cabbage can fight poverty? Pocket Change: Pitching in for a Better World explains the concept of bartering to young readers, an old practice that sames money and resources, and gives people the opportunity to know their neighbors. "Pick up the rest of the titles in the Orca Footprints series for more ways you can help the world," Morgan says.
You can find more recommendations on our Staff Picks page. Happy reading!
