Avoid a $250 fine – know the fireworks rules in Iowa City
Fireworks sales will begin in the state of Iowa on June 1 but using them within Iowa City’s city limits is and remains illegal. Novelty fireworks like sparklers and snakes, are allowed.
A reminder about the firework restrictions within the City of Iowa City:
Firework use Iowa City prohibits the use of fireworks inside city limits. Violators face a minimum $250 fine.
Firework sales A 2017amendment to the City’s Code limits the sale of fireworks to industrial zones – this includes areas with storage and factory facilities. Grocery stores and storefronts can no longer have fireworks for sale outside their buildings.
To report illegal fireworks in Iowa City, call the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-6800. It is helpful to officers if the caller provides a house address or vehicle description.
