Celebrate Earth Day in Iowa City with several great events
The City of Iowa City is proud to be a part of several community events focused on promoting Earth Day and environmental sustainability. All of the events listed below are free and open to the public.
An Earth Day Documentary Screening
Attend a free environmental movie night with popcorn and treats at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Iowa City Public Library.
During the screening of "The Age of Consequences," there will be information and staff available to learn more about waste reduction and environmental protection opportunities in Iowa City. Take home a free kitchen compost container! Learn more.
World Climate Simulation
The University of Iowa Public Policy Center is hosting a World Climate Simulation event in celebration of Earth Week from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the Iowa City Public Library. There is no fee to participate, but attendees are asked to register online in advance. Iowa City Mayor Jim Throgmorton will participate. Learn more.
UI Theme Semester 'Climate for Change' Clean Up Event
A stormwater clean up event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2018, in celebration of Earth Day and the University of Iowa Theme Semester, Climate for Change.
The public is invited to attend an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at the Landfill and Recycling Center, 3900 Hebl Ave. SW.
Come learn about composting and recycling, as well as facility operations, equipment and more! Snacks will be included. Take home a free kitchen compost container. Learn more.
Solar Power Hours
Johnson County recently announced a new program called Solarize Johnson County, an opportunity for residents in all of Johnson County (including Iowa City!) and West Branch, to learn more about solar energy and potentially invest in it.
The program will kick off at noon on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Johnson County Health and Human Services Building, Room 203B-C, 855 S. Dubuque St. It will run through August with more than 20 Solar Power Hours. Learn more.
