The
Iowa City Public Library Bookmobile officially rolled into the city on April
10, 2017, making its first public appearance at our National Bookmobile Day
party the next day.
In
its first year of service – June 2017 through March 2018 – the Bookmobile made
752 scheduled stops, greeting 12,227 visitors. More than 20,000 items were
checked out on the Bookmobile. The Library-on-wheels was home to 79 Storytime
programs with a combined 2,650 attendees.
The Bookmobile traveled throughout Iowa City and rural
Johnson County,
surpassing 6,000 miles on the odometer. If we decided to go take the Bookmobile
on a road trip, that mileage would get us to Cancun, Mexico and back, or
Juneau, Alaska and back.
The reason we’ve managed to keep the Bookmobile still clean
and shiny after our first year of fun on the road? Bookmobile Assistant Shawna
has taken it to the car wash six times!
Happy
birthday, Bookmobile – and many more!
Look for the Bookmobile at STEAM Fest on April 15
We're pleased to announce that the Bookmobile will be part of the Iowa City Parks and
Recreation's STEAM Fest.
STEAM Fest will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area Park Lodge, 579
McCollister Blvd.
Children and adults of all ages are invited
to experience
hands-on educational activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art
and
Math, led by local community groups. More than 20 organizations will host interactive activities.
There is no fee to participate in this event and all are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Announcing additions to the Bookmobile's collection
We have two new additions to our Bookmobile: new shelving and a selection of documentaries!
The new shelving added 180 additional inches of shelf space for our DVD collection.
Speaking of DVDs, Bookmobile visitors might notice that we've added a selection of documentaries on DVD, as well as
a short-term batch of music CDs.
"We enjoy bringing small browsing collections when
people ask for them, so let us know what you'd like to see on the Bookmobile," Library
Assistant Stacey McKim says.
As always, you'll find the latest Bookmobile schedule here. We'll see you on the road!
Overheard on the Bookmobile
A parent of one of our Bookmobile visitors had this story to share about her daughter, who recently celebrated her third birthday.
"When asked how she wanted to celebrate, she said she wanted to visit the Bookmobile!"
We think that's the best way to celebrate a birthday -- a visit to your favorite place where you get to check out favorite books and movies to take home.
