Help kids in our community: donate books to local drive
The City of Iowa City is helping collect children's books for a community book drive led by the United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties.
The community is invited to participate in My Very Own Book Drive, by bringing new and gently used books to the Iowa City Senior Center, 28 S. Linn St.
The goal of the drive is to collect 6,000 books during the month of April for children enrolled in Pre-K through Sixth Grade. Last year, the Iowa City community collected more than 5,200 books.
"Let a child know someone cares about their success. Working together, we can make a real difference in getting kids off to a good start – just by donating books," United Way of Johnson and Washington Counties President and CEO Katie Knight said.
This year, all collected books will be distributed this summer and fall with a focus on children who qualify for the free or reduced school lunch program.
