Iowa Interstate Railroad announces increased train speed through Iowa City
Due to recent improvements to its infrastructure and the elimination of the previously used “yard speed” in Iowa City, Iowa Interstate Railroad, Ltd., plans to increase the operating speed of its trains through Iowa City to 25 miles per hour beginning April 1, 2018.
The existing train speed limit of 20 miles per hour has been used for trains preparing to stop frequently at train yards. Change in operating speed will be most noticeable to those crossing the tracks, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, as the length of time required to wait for a passing train may be reduced. Drivers are reminded to always yield to approaching trains, and pedestrians and cyclists should use caution when crossing tracks as approaching trains move faster than they appear. Stay alert around railroad tracks, as cellphones and headsets can distract from the sound of an approaching train.
